Chronologically, the existence of the current Faculty of Engineering at the University of Mataram began with the establishment of a Preparatory Committee for the Mataram Technical College (STTM). STTM began accepting new students in the 1985/1986 academic year. This College was deliberately prepared to become the embryo of the Faculty of Engineering. In order to meet the demands of the NTB community for Mataram University to have a Faculty of Engineering, given the lack of experts in the field of Civil Engineering, especially in the field of water, the preparatory committee has proposed a change in the status of STTM to become a Civil Engineering Study Program. This was approved by the issuance of Decree of the Director General of Higher Education Number: 68/DIKTI/KEP/1991 dated November 8, 1991, concerning the Mataram College of Engineering changing its status to the Civil Engineering Study Program of the University of Mataram under the coordination of the Rector of the University of Mataram.
Through many processes and obstacles, the University of Mataram tried to improve the quality of resources and infrastructure of the Civil Engineering Study Program, until finally the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Mataram was established with a Civil Engineering Study Program based on the Decree of the Minister of Education and Culture of the Republic of Indonesia Number: 0375/0/1993 dated October 21, 1993.
In its relatively young age, without ignoring the constraints of the existing teaching staff and starting from the urgent needs of the NTB region for experts in the field of engineering, starting in the 1996/1997 academic year, the Faculty of Engineering, University of Mataram prepared two more study programs, namely the Mechanical Engineering Study Program and the Electrical Engineering Study Program. The efforts that have been initiated have finally paid off, namely with the issuance of the Decree of the Directorate General of Higher Education Number: 115 / DIKTI / Kep / 1998 the two study programs were officially established. Starting in the 1998/1999 academic year, the Faculty of Engineering, Mataram University had three study programs, namely the Civil Engineering Study Program, the Mechanical Engineering Study Program and the Electrical Engineering Study Program. In 2012 the Informatics Engineering Study Program was formed, with the issuance of operational permit No. 195/E/O/2012, dated June 5, 2012. In early 2004, the process of submitting a proposal for the establishment of the Architecture Study Program at the Faculty of Engineering, Mataram University began. By going through a long process and requiring a struggle that does not know the word surrender from time to time, finally in 2020 the Architecture Study Program of the Faculty of Engineering, University of Mataram was formed with the issuance of the Decree of the Minister of Education and Culture of the Republic of Indonesia concerning Permission to Open an Architecture Study Program for Undergraduate Programs at the University of Mataram No. 45 / M / 2020 dated January 10, 2020.
